Enjoying the Best of Glasgow’s West End

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

Much of who I am is a result of my experiences growing up in Glasgow. It gave me my first business opportunity as a young boy which has shaped how I approach business even today. It is amazing to witness the new energy and continuous growth of the town as it has become Scotland’s second largest city and has won such awards as the “UK City of Architecture and Design” and “Europe’s City of Culture.”

One of the hottest areas of Glasgow is the popular West End. Once you become a resident, you will definitely not have a shortage of activities to choose from. Situated near neighborhoods like Hillhead, Dowanhill, Kelvingrove, Hyndland, and now Partick, the West End truly has something for everyone with its eclectic mix of cafes, bars, tea rooms, shopping areas, boutiques, nightclubs and restaurants.

As a local business owner and proud Glaswegian, I’d like to share with you some of my personal favourites for good food, drinks and entertainment, and maybe I’ll see you there!

Restaurants

16 at 16 Byres Roadgives you a fine dining experience set within a cute and cosy space. The food is to die for and the wide selection of rare beers is a real treat.

Delizique on Woodlands Roadis a really cool, trendy place to eat fine foods and drink fizzy wine, or even just pop in to enjoy a few drinks at the bar.

Cafe Rio on Woodlands Roadis the total opposite to Delizique with its retro feel. The energy is relaxed and easy and they offer a pleasing selection of simple foods. Again, it’s a great place just to have a drink and soak up the vibe.

Crab Shack on Argyle Streetis to die for if you love seafood. The place is small but has a very cleverly architect designed space with a mezzanine level. It has a feel of fine dining yet very welcoming. Go here to enjoy a glass of champagne at the bar whilst waiting on your oysters

Pubs

McPhabbs at 23 Sandyford Placeis a bit of a rough diamond in that it is off the beaten track. It has a great staff and a brilliant atmosphere where you can watch football or rugby and eat some good pub food. During the Glasgow Comedy Festival you can catch some intimate shows in their basement.

Lebowskis on Argyle Streetis a very smart gastro pub that has a variation of bands from jazz to folk playing on the weekend. With their friendly staff and excellent cocktails, they have created a really cool vibe about the place.

The Ben Nevis on Argyle Street. If it's a pint and some good Glasgow banter you’re after, then this is the place for you…truly a mix of realGlaswegians!

Other entertainment and attractions

The Grosvenor Cinema on Ashton Laneis a boutique cinema with small but perfectly formed auditoriums. They offer large, comfy armchairs in an intimate setting and the range of films are always cool and artistic.

Kelvingrove Park --This gorgeous park is always bustling with dog walkers, skateboarders and people just hanging out in the sun. Enjoy its lovely wildlife sanctuary and restored fountain which is a real masterpiece. There's also a really lovely cafe with alfresco dining and home baked cupcakes.

Ashton Lane-- This bustling lane is full of bars, restaurants and clubs. It is a real hotspot on the weekend for the young, hip and trendy crowd

The QMU (Queen Margaret Union)- This is a legendary music venue to catch all sorts of indie band performances. It’s surrounded by a host of other university buildings and makes it feel like you've stumbled upon a hidden gem.
